Kleingartenkolonies in Berlin (Small garden colonies)

About a block from our apartment are the "gardens".  We have enjoyed our morning walks through them since we arrived in Germany.  There are over 100 "garden colonies" in Berlin.  They are leased from the government, have rules that must be abided by, and are beautiful.  They have small cottages, that cannot be a permanent home; plumbing and electricity varies.

They are truly an oasis in the city.  Each unique and ever- changing, as all gardens are.    It is a pleasure we enjoy each day!

Trip on the Spreewald

In July we spent a Saturday exploring the beautiful Spreewald in a punt (boat). This area is a designated biosphere reserve made up of 200 small water channels within about 187 sq. miles.  There are about 50,000 people who live here and they are descendants of the first settlers.  They have preserved their traditional language, customs and clothing.
They depend on tourism for their income.
